One Microsoft quarter now outbuilds its entire Africa footprint
Microsoft added a gigawatt of AI data-centre capacity worldwide in three months. Its tracked footprint across all of Africa, built over several years, totals less than a third of that.
Ninety million dollars a day. That is roughly what Microsoft spent on capital expenditure in the quarter that ended June 30 — $41 billion in three months, on its way to nearly $116 billion for the full fiscal year, the company disclosed on its July 29 earnings call. Two-thirds of it went to "short-lived assets": the GPUs and CPUs that power AI training and inference, according to a transcript of the call carried by Converge Digest and corroborated independently by data-center industry outlet DatacenterDynamics and financial-transcript service StockAnalysis. In that single quarter, Microsoft brought roughly 1 gigawatt of new data-centre capacity online — part of 88 new facilities added across five continents during the fiscal year — and told investors it remains on track to roughly double its overall global capacity within two years.
Set that gigawatt against Microsoft's own presence in Africa. According to AI Data Center Index, an independent tracker of hyperscale AI infrastructure, Microsoft's tracked African footprint — an operational Azure AI region in Johannesburg (80 megawatts), a second Johannesburg region (60 megawatts), a planned geothermal facility with G42 in Kenya's Olkaria field (100 megawatts) and other tracked sites — totals roughly 290 megawatts. Built up over several years of announcements, partnerships and, in April, a fresh $329 million commitment to South African cloud and AI capacity. Microsoft alone deployed more than three times that amount of computing power globally in the three months of April through June.
The comparison is not a criticism of any single decision Microsoft has made in Africa; it is a measure of scale. And it lines up with a wider pattern researchers have already flagged. Xalam Analytics, a boutique research firm tracking digital infrastructure in emerging markets, found in an analysis published this year that Africa's share of global data-centre capacity has fallen to roughly 0.8%, down from about 1% two years earlier — despite the continent adding new subsea cables, expanding fibre networks and bringing new facilities online the entire time. Guy Zibi, the firm's managing partner, put the dynamic plainly: Africa's absolute infrastructure base is growing, but the rest of the world's is growing faster, which shrinks the continent's share even as its own numbers improve. Xalam separately estimated Africa's share of global AI compute resources specifically at around 0.2% — a rounding error next to the continent's roughly 18% share of world population, tracked independently by the AI Data Center Index's own count of just 19 African AI facilities across seven countries, most of them still in the planning stage rather than operating.
Himilo's read: the story here is not that Microsoft is ignoring Africa. It is one of the continent's more active hyperscale investors, and in February the company said it was on pace to invest $50 billion by 2030 across the entire "Global South" — a category spanning India, Indonesia, Mexico and Africa together, not Africa alone — including more than $8 billion in the last fiscal year on data-centre infrastructure across that whole bloc, and a Kenya-based satellite-and-AI food-security pilot with the East Africa Grain Council. The trouble is structural, not a matter of goodwill: as Xalam's research argues, hyperscale capacity follows workload density, and workload density follows where governments, banks and platforms actually choose to run their systems. A cloud region only deepens into a gigawatt-scale campus once there is a threshold volume of national ID platforms, payment rails and enterprise systems generating sustained demand locally, rather than being processed offshore.
That is the opening African policymakers and infrastructure investors can actually work — and the one the gigawatt gap makes concrete rather than abstract. Every additional national payment system, health record platform or government service that African states insist on hosting inside the continent's own data centres adds to the workload density that, on Xalam's own logic, is the only lever that moves the needle. Cables and subsea fibre already increased Africa's connectivity by hundreds of millions of new broadband users this decade; the next fight is over where the data that connectivity carries actually gets processed. Microsoft's quarterly capital reports will keep climbing past $40 billion regardless of what Africa does. Whether the continent's own share of that number ever moves past 1% depends less on how many summits pledge investment and more on how many African institutions choose, this year, to keep their own workloads at home.
