Gemini is replacing Google Assistant. It still needs data Assistant never did

Google begins retiring Google Assistant for Gemini on September 4, but the cloud-only replacement drops offline support and Android Go compatibility on a continent where 63% of people live in mobile-broadband coverage yet still can't afford to get online.

September 4 is the date Google has set to begin retiring Google Assistant on Android phones, tablets, watches and connected headphones, replacing it worldwide with Gemini. The rollout will be staggered over several weeks rather than a single global cutoff, according to Google's own notification emails to users, but the direction is not in doubt: once a device is upgraded, there is no way back to the assistant that has answered "Hey Google" since 2016.

For most of the world, this is a straightforward upgrade story. Gemini remembers conversation context across a chat, handles follow-up questions without restarting, and can reason over a photo taken through the camera in the same exchange it uses to answer a question. Google has been explicit that the new assistant is built for depth rather than speed. That trade-off is where the African angle sharpens into something more than a footnote.

Why Android Go matters more here than anywhere else

Google's own support documentation lists the Gemini mobile app's minimum bar: 2GB of RAM, Android 9 or later, and, critically, no support at all for Android Go, the stripped-down version of Android that Google itself built for entry-level phones with limited memory. Android Go is not a niche product on this continent. It sits on a meaningful share of the sub-$100 handsets that Transsion's Tecno, Infinix and Itel brands, along with rebadged budget Samsungs, sell across Nigeria, Kenya and beyond, markets where Android already commands roughly 85% of the smartphone base, by far the platform's strongest showing anywhere in the world.

The deeper problem is not memory. It is the network. Google Assistant, whatever its limitations, could handle a slice of everyday commands, a flashlight, a timer, a basic alarm, without a live connection, using processing built into the phone itself. Gemini cannot. Google's own developer documentation describes the cloud version of the app as unusable without an active internet connection; a company support representative, responding to a user's feature request for offline access in December, could point only to narrow on-device features like call transcription, not to the assistant itself working without data.

The gigabyte that costs forty times more three countries over

That distinction lands differently in Lusaka than in London. The GSMA's Mobile Economy Africa 2026 report puts a hard number on the continent's defining digital problem: 63% of Africans live within reach of mobile broadband coverage but are not using the mobile internet at all, a gap driven above all by what a gigabyte of data costs relative to what people earn. Cable.co.uk's global pricing survey, updated in June, found Nigeria, Ghana and Malawi among the cheapest data markets on Earth, all under 40 cents a gigabyte, but the same continent holds three of the five most expensive countries in the world for the same gigabyte: Zimbabwe at $43.75, South Sudan at $23.70, the Central African Republic at $10.90. An assistant that must phone home for even a timer is a very different proposition depending on which side of that spread a user happens to live on.

None of this means Gemini is a worse product. By most independent accounts it plainly is not. It means Google is making a universal, un-optional trade of offline reliability for online intelligence, on a platform whose largest user base by penetration is also the one for whom connectivity is least guaranteed and most expensive. The company has not published a region-specific fallback for Android Go devices or a lighter Gemini tier for markets with the usage gap the GSMA describes, and nothing in its public rollout documentation suggests one is coming before September 4.

The practical test will arrive on an ordinary day, not launch day: whether a Tecno Spark owner in a low-coverage part of rural Kenya can still set a timer without paying for a data session to do it. Google has answered plenty of questions about what Gemini can do. It has not yet answered what happens to the users for whom the answer requires a network that Assistant never did.
